We all wished at times that we could start life over with a clean blank slate, but still be able to maintain the knowledge that we have obtained over the years. There is always the classic saying, “I love to know what I know now, when I was a lot younger.” Of course it would be nice to start at the beginning, however it would be extremely frustrated going through the painstaking slow pace of life. It would be more pleasing if one could just start over with a blank slate, but remain an adult. A life in which one can reinvent themselves and not be bound be social/economic constraints that limit us all. For example, one may have desire to visit a place of business that specializes in the art of exotic dancing, except they never will for their moral constraints that has been instilled on them by their parents/friends and themselves prohibit such action. Only if there was a world in which there were no pressures from parents, friends, societal constraints, governmental regulations or any other pressure that could regulate one’s life. Happily there is such a world in which if one desires to be another sex they can without receiving the negative views that society places on such an act.

This virtual world known as Second Life, allows anyone the ability to be what they want and to go to places in which they will be physically unable to do so. It is impossible for one to travel to a Paris, France of the 1800’s because it has passed two centuries ago. Only way to do such a thing if there was a time machine, but only a fool or conspiracy theorist might believe that there is such a machine. On the other hand Second Life allows one to visit 1800’s Paris, France. Second Life simply allows one to have a “second life” in which they can act out on the things that they repressed in the first life. Now for many, experimentation with narcotics might be an option because many in first life chooses not to, however it is physical impossible to experience the act through a computer interface. Perhaps though, if one wishes to fulfill certain sexual fantasies that they otherwise would not act out in first life, they can in Second Life. There is nothing linking your avatar to yourself in real life. Second life has no moral code, societal code, parental influence or police force to regulate ones actions. If one wishes to go streaking through the quad to the gymnasium, they simply can. Now this has lead to many individuals claiming that Second Life is nothing but sex. However as Eloise Pasteur stated, real life at times is nothing but sex, in her presentation given in Second Life at the University of Kentucky Island. When one has the ability to experiment with sex with no repercussion or constraints, they will freely do so. It’s not like they can catch a virtual sexually transmitted disease (which happens to not exist). The group that I belong to has decided to research the world of sex culture in second life. The section that I was assigned to research was the market extent of second life. Now this is an extremely broad category, and I have informed my group of this. Well here is sex and he market in second life.

When one first begins their adventure in Second Life, they are protected from the reality of the grid, on orientation island. This island was designed by the creators of Second Life for the purpose of training new members about second life. They have to learn how to fly, take pictures, click on objects, and many more newbious tasks. During this time they are nothing more than children and the island is their protective parents. However after a while these newbious kids master simple operations and leave their parents protective nest for good. That is when they come into contact with the grid it is open range for anything and a little bit of everything.

The behavior of the avatar at first is nothing but confusion and feeling lost in a total alien world. The first action they will do it search or explore an area that they can call their home or some place that will give them the feeling of familiarity. In the case of Hillbilly Marksman, he did not have this problem for when he entered the world of Second Life he already had a home for him at the UK Island. But after a few days they look for more than just familiarity. It is important when examining this, (I will eventually get into the sex industry) to remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Maslow's hierarchy of needs

source: Kenneth Sorensen

The first step as we know is physiological needs, where one requires food, water, shelter, and clothing. However in this world it is totally non-existent for one does not have to eat and drink to survive. An avatar does not have to shelter or need shelter at all to live. You can walk into the ocean and not drown as you fall like rock to the bottom. With the removal of this level it automatically starts the next level up with security need. Now trying to mold this step for application of second life is somewhat difficult to do for we have to remember that this is a little different than the real world. However fulfill of this step is what has been mentioned before and that is learning the familiarity of a place with it turning into as you makeshift home.

Due to the restrictions of the first two tiers of need, avatars are pre-programmed for certain behaviors. That behavior is nothing but what Milton Friedman would love consumerisms. Because there no physiological needs and our avatars bring with it shocks from the real world, we start acting on everything as buy, buy, buy. Now these shocks are not like the severe shocks that were describe in Shock Doctrine, but what they are shocks that as occurred over time in the real world. We have this image of what beauty is, and the image that we have revolves around appearance not personality. The image has been created that one must be skinny and look like supermodels. Fat and other things that we deem as imperfections are not acceptable we strive or desire that look of perfect. In real life my avatar is somewhat similar to me, I have blondeish hair, and a goaltee. However though I am not as tall as my avatar his and I am slightly heavy. As you see my avatar is a tooth pick. That just goes to show that even I see imperfections in myself that I wish was not there.

Would it surprise one that this so called fashion shock has carried into Second Life? Not one bit at all, and as result we attempt to turn our avatar in to the perfect image of what we want to be. This creates a somewhat slippery slope, because as you begin to purchase skins for your avatar you dive head first into the world of consumerisms. This is a driving force of the market and sex culture of second life. After the effects of learning how to fly and purchasing a vehicle, one becomes bored and looks for ways to fill such void. Avatars will start by at first buying clothes for example. Though it’s still not enough, they need to make their avatar into as realistic as they can. Next will follow the purchases of skins which will eventually leads to most individuals purchasing sexual organs.

These sexual organs are not just mere graphics, they are however functioning organs that are able to arouse and emit virtual bodily fluids. This parallel the behavior of the narrator in Fight Club. The narrator before he became Tyler Durgden was so possessed by the consumer world. The basic IKEA furniture was not enough; he had to have to new bathroom arrangement or the latest thing on the market. He was trapped in a world that he could not escape from.

This is what happens in second life. The purchase of a harmless sexy skin has a high possibility that it will lead to full convergence of sex culture in second life. From the interviews that I have conducted with most individuals the first thing purchased was a “perfect” skin. This is what drives the sex industry of second life. This might seem a large stretch, but through discussions I have learned that most frequented places deal with sex. As humans we strive to branch out and make connections. We value the art of communication and hold on to it as a key to our survival. Take for example the interview I conducted of the avatar LB. His main purpose in Second Life was to conduct research. However what occurred is that his research was left him the void of human interaction. This lead to his purchase of a functioning penis, for he stated and I quote, “[concerning his research] yea it’s rather solitary….so like in life….need to socialize.” The interview was conducted during the time that he was actually making his purchase at Woody Penis Store, on Pleasure Island Nudist Beach. As you can see in the picture below, the complete structure was centered on the market of penises. You could get them shaved, un shaved, cut, uncut and some selections could produce viritual bodily fluids.

During one of our in-world adventures with the legendary A-team, we visit an island that was designed to center around marriage and the glorious event of weddings. It was a very well constructed sim that gave different options and scenarios for wedding ceremonies. I got intrigued by a mansion built on the island. This mansion was somewhat of a reception hall that gave guest opportunities to interact and dance. For what is a wedding without dancing? On the walls of the Mansion were portraits of females in certain nude poises and costumes. The top floor of the structure housed a somewhat honeymoon suite where partners could consummate the marriage. They could do it in the bed in a variety of position or against the railings. But the most interesting find of this island was when Jaylan discovered a hidden Castle in the sky. So far this whole island was concerned with weddings, but this place was almost from another planet. The castle was a sex zone. Inside the Castle, were areas that provided for large orgies and sexual stimulation/dominatrix. The walls displayed numerous pictures that were set on a slide show demonstrating real live acts of bondage, dominatrix, lesbian action, and anal sex. Using discretion, I felt overall it would be best if those pictures were not displayed, for it was even disturbing to me. Each floor of the structure presented different medieval sexual contraptions and one floor was dedicated to bestiality with a horse, dog and other animals. Outside of the castle against the outer walls, were retail booths that sold sexual clothing, scripts, sexual organs, and other items. This demonstrates the diversity and variety of the sex industry within second life. Without Jaylan curiosity I would have totally missed the complex because it was constructed above the normal viewing range. This is a good example of modalities of constraint when examining the principal of architecture. Lessig defined this constrain as a representation of the encoding of works to place restriction on its use. Now for the Sex Castle, the constraint is not placed on the visitors of the structure for they know where the structure exists. The constraint however is placed on the general public they may never think to fly above the ground level. Most likely the creators of the castle desired to keep visitors to the structure to a minimum, to ensure privacy and respect to the avatars that were committed to area.

Sex always sells, and even in life majority of events or interactions have-- sexual undertones that are visible or occurs subconsciously. Now the previous statement, lead to some interesting debate within my group. One of my group members stated not everything has is related to sex, and I thought she actually made a valid point. However when I had a discussion with Eloise Pasteur she increase my awareness of sexual themes that might go unnoticed. For example, when a students go to class to learn there may not be a sexual behavior behind it. But take a look at that same group and see how many came to class dress to impress. Even I, myself will come to class dress up for that same reason. In addition she added that especially in the warmer seasons of the year one’s dress becomes for provocative. Females may elect to wear a tank top that reveals their cleavage and males my wear tight muscle shirts to display their masculinity. The same goes in second life, we want to look attractive and feel attractive as well. “’Sex sells’ is the underlying motto of it all, not even a hidden agenda.” Sex is a basic human behavior and one should not be surprised that it is such a large driving force in second life because it is in real life.

With discussion with the stripper Zenia, one is able to see the extent of sex. I got to know Zenia before she became a stripper, and became aware with open relationships. To her second life is a tool in which she can experiment and connect somewhat to the one’s inner self. Second Life allows her to do the acts that she desires to do in real life. For example Zenia, if she could would dress more provocative in real life than what she does; however the norms that her friends and parents place on her restrict her from following through with her desires. Also she can be herself and not worry about the being pressured to conform to certain standards. Through my discussions I became aware to the fact that she is very sexually active in second life. She likes to experiment with men and discover new things about herself. But however there are dangers to such acts. From observation, sex is traded like candy at times and that is not always a good thing. When one has numerous sexual partners the act itself begins to lose importance. Sex is not solely for continuation of the species as Eloise notes. Sex is actually is a healthy and pleasurable exercise. The problem that arises in second life is you cannot receive the pleasure that your avatar might receive becomes as of yet there is not an interface that can produce such an effect. The pleasurable event in this case is nothing but solitary. Solitary at first might be feel the need but what it actually creates is isolationism. Like the narrator that became Tyler Durgden, consumerism and need of possession lead him to isolationism. It was all about owning that next IKEA piece. That is the same case here in second life. Consumerism drives them to make continuing purchases of sexual related materials but what good does that do, for it will not increase the solitary pleasure that they may receive. Sexually partners in second life are just like people you talk to as you wait the long lines for lunch, at the bank, or especially the post offices. You are not talking to them because you are really interested in what they have to say or you want to get to know them. What you are looking for is a small talk conversation of little importance just to pass the time or to entertain yourself. These conversational pseudo like friendship is discardable once you leave that place and travel to your next destination. Just like the conversations that Tyler Durgden develops while flying, the sexual relationships are the same way. It is nothing more than mere convince and afterwards you do not think about. It is this isolation that destroys to prospect of developing a community because relationships do not matter and it causes isolation. Take a look at below these fantasies are developed to stimulate sexual activity and it succeeds in that. But by destroying the meaning behind the relationship due to the openness it is slowly killing the community and playing into the hands of consumerisms. Now for the individuals that are married in second life, can argue that they this is not the case for them. It may not for individuals that are in a relationship, for to them the sexual acts do not lose their meaning. However they still face the risk of solitary.

Going back to Zenia, when a follow up interview was conducted, much to my surprise she had gone deeper into the sex culture of second life. She had become a stripper at Tantalus, working roughly 6 to 10 hours a week. For her she was extremely excited for it gave her a chance to make money and furthermore fulfill her desire to dance. She claims that the reason she became a stripper was because she loves to dance and the best places to dance in second life typically are the strip clubs. She is able to clear roughly about 200 L a night and sometimes more. The practice at the club is that her payment comes through tips with 20% of them going to the club owners. Now when lap dances are performed, they are conducted right in front of the whole audience so as a result there is the risk of free-riders and invading someone’s time that in this case has value. The lap dance result scale varies like this: for 350L top only comes off; for 550L bottoms comes off but the dancers will still be wearing a thong; and for 800L one can get the whole show.

No matter how strong the human sex drive is, it is still at times shocking to see the full extent of what occurs. For every sexual fantasy that one may have hidden inside themselves can be fulfilled in second life. If one is looking for bondage or even lesbian sites it is all there for them. During my adventures I accidently discovered a Lesbian only clubs and was heavily chastised for entering their sacred grounds. I have discovered places that play relief boot leg copies of pornographic films starring professional adult stars like Sky Lopez, Brianna Banks, and Jenna Jameson.

If one desires they can sit and receive solitary pleasure in world and in the real world. If the desires of committing what societal make deem as taboos in real life, is treated like a social norm. For example fantasizing about having a sexual intercourse with your teacher or how about you doctor?

Second life does offer the chance for individuals to discover their true inner self and express their desires. One is able to do such things for the regulations that limit their real world self have no effect or minimum effect in second life. However there are still limits between this because it is in the virtual world not real life world. Because of this true satisfaction may not be achieved, even though avatars will continue searching and spending boundless amounts of money to find such. What it creates is a society that is all about buying and buying with the end results leading to the creation of naked capitalists. The capitalists end up alienating themselves more and more by practicing the acts that they have began to become hooked upon. Isolation is what occurs and with that leads to the destruction of the community and the possibilities for that community…..
